Seaweed Farmers Workshop
14-18 July 2008, Wagina
The seaweed farmers workshop was successfully attended by some 30 farmers
from Cookson, Arariki and Niku villages in Wagina (Choiseul Province). The
resource personnel were from the COSPSI Project providing the important
course that provides the understanding on why they farm seaweed and broaden
the farmers’ knowledge on farming methods and techniques.
The Project Manager with the assistance of the SSDA emphasized to the
farmers that the EU funded seaweed project objective is simply to see that
the seaweed industry is sustained to benefit the farmers and the country’s
economy as a whole. The farmers were encouraged that engaging in seaweed
farming will result in protecting other marine resources. The were also
advised that engaging in seaweed farming must be the farmers’ commitment
even when farm gate price decreases. They also advised participants that
they are representing the community of Wagina and what was learned during
the workshop must be passed on to other farmers.
The farmers thanked the project for providing the opportunity to learn the
importance of engaging in seaweed farming. They now understand that
sustaining the industry depends on the production they made which will
contribute to the sustaining of their scarce marine resources.
